Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Veneers are a quick and easy way to improve the look of your smile. Veneers are thin shells made to look just like your natural teeth. They’re cemented to the surface of your tooth to improve its shape, color, and overall appearance.

Dr. Pavlov uses veneers to help patients address a number of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Crooked or misshapen teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Gapped teeth

Veneers are most commonly made from porcelain. Porcelain is a durable, stain-resistant material that provides a strength and appearance similar to your natural teeth.

Veneers are a permanent solution, so it’s important to speak with Dr. Pavlov to determine if they’re right for you.

What are Lumineers?

Veneers require alterations to your natural tooth. Lumineers are an ultra-thin veneer that requires much less enamel removal than other types of veneers.

Lumineers are made from a translucent porcelain material that replicates the appearance of your natural tooth enamel. Lumineers allow you to enhance the appearance of your smile while preserving your natural tooth structure.

How are veneers placed?

Depending on your needs, Dr. Pavlov begins by trimming a small amount of tooth enamel to make room for your veneers. He then takes impressions of your smile and sends them to a lab that constructs your custom porcelain veneers.

Once they come in (typically after a week or two), Dr. Pavlov checks the shape, color, and fit of your veneers before permanently cementing them into place. Dr. Pavlov may schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure your veneers are properly placed.

Do veneers require any special care?

The great thing about veneers is that they’re maintained just like your natural teeth. Daily brushing and flossing and regular dental exams are the best way to maintain and extend the life of your veneers.

Although porcelain veneers are highly durable, they aren’t the same as your natural teeth. You can prevent chips or damage to your veneers by eliminating bad habits like teeth grinding or clenching and avoiding chewing hard items like ice.

With proper care, your porcelain veneers can last for decades.
